Wake Up Black Men

Richard Johnson and Dee Spiller had everything. They were star defensive backs for Eisenhower High School in Houston and their way of playing collegiate football at Baylor University. They brought their high school team for the State of Texas 5A semifinals in 1993 and seemed headed for greatness.

Unfortunately, they made the same mistake that many young males are blacks, tempted by the allure of street life and eventually graduating to a life of crime. Johnson and Spiller, along with two teammates, has committed several robberies in the Houston area football door, which eventually led to their arrest at Eisenhower High School on a warm spring day in 1994.

The two lost their full scholarship to Baylor and then lost their future. Have fallen into the trap of being a young black male with a criminal record, no education and no hope for the future.

“Many of these men grew up in fatherless homes, and never They had good role models. No one around them knows how to navigate the mainstream society,” said Joseph T. Jones, director of the fatherhood skills and works in New York City Center.

The recent statistics are striking. According to data collected by researchers at Ivy League institutions such as Columbia, Harvard and Princeton, 50 percent of men over 20 years blacks without high school diploma were unemployed, and 72 percent of high school dropouts were unemployed in 2004 .

Furthermore, 16 percent of African American men in their 20s who did not attend college were incarcerated in 1995. By 2001, that number ballooned to 21 percent. In addition, when black men reach their 30s, 60 percent of those who left school would be spending time in a penitentiary.

Men blacks are at a crossroads. The question is what is the cause of these alarming statistics is and what remedies are reversing this trend?

The lack of working Black men is in stark contrast to women of color who have benefited from economic and social benefits to find appropriate employment.

“Over the past two decades, the economy has made great and low-skilled women, helped by public policy, hooked on it. But young blacks men fell further behind,” said Ronald B. Mincey, professor of social work at Columbia University.

This phenomenon can be attributed to the glorification of prison culture of mainstream entertainment. It seems as if men earn more than blacks in the African American community if they spend four years in prison, rather than four years at an institution of higher education.

Scholars attribute this trend to lack of education among the black male population, which takes them away from society.

Although the statistics are alarming, there are remedies that can solve this epidemic afflicting the African American community.

It ’s time that African American men to take responsibility for their actions. Yes, African Americans may have suffered more difficulties and obstacles of any other ethnic group in this country, but to each his own way They choose to take in life.

It ’s time that African-Americans to put down the drugs and weapons and collecting textbooks. The idea that blacks are “acting white” if they strive for excellence in the classroom or boardroom business must be abandoned immediately, and African Americans must embrace positive role models from the black community.

Entertainers who glorify violence in their music and movies need to become better role models for millions of children who worship their every word.

African American men must take responsibility and take care of their children. Afro-Americans happened to mentor at-risk youth who do not have father figures in their lives.

Finally, African-American should wake up and understand that they are more than just criminals and thugs, as traditional media portrays them. African American men should be aware that their ancestors were royalty in Africa, and that the same royal blood still flows in their veins today.
