Scars to Stars: the 50 year odyssey of the Star Poster Program

It was 1991, the inaugural year of the Bryan College of Fine Arts (BAVPA), an elementary grades Magnet School in Bryan, Texas, and as I walked down the hall one day behind the principal and a father of one of my third graders heard I am the father said, “I said to my son as one of the other kids bothers you,” Hit him with a pipe! “That same year I also fifth grade student whose brother was stabbed to death was in ninth grade campus. Both incidents were disturbing. Obviously there was a” violence is the solution “mentally which many students in the community were raised. I was forced to do something, but what?

A few years later, the fine arts faculty members (we call ourselves the D’Staff MAD) was told to come up with after-school enrichment activities for students. The drama, music, art, theater and dance teachers were later than other faculty members to suspend and functions, as well as coaches, we accept not being paid. Then I remember two incidents from the first year.

Everyone has at least one hero, especially children when their formative years of character development and struggle with who they are to be accessed. The cartoon heroes of my childhood, Mighty Mouse, Superman and Captain America somehow morphed into the idol of my adolescence, Martin Luther King, Jr., Jesus Christ and Mahatma Gandhi.

Solomon said: “Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.” If this is a belief confirmed, regardless of immediate and long-term goals each of us perceive in our efforts to improve environments should include strategies for the entire spectrum of a community ‘exist at all economic strata, classes, subcultures, levels and age, especially young people. Which will lead to a better society where all will benefit altruism is a partnership involving individuals, organizations, businesses and government in the stewardship of cultural, educational and economic ideologies.

Keeping this in mind, I tried something kids could find cover, a venue for positive social change, and at the same time, learn about the elements and principles of art while trying to effectively communicate their ideas. Children have other social problems than just violence in schools. They have visual voices that need to accompany affective and vivid communicate their thoughts, insights and feelings. Art touches people. He communicates. It inspires. It does! This is a major feature of the posters. Therefore I made Coolality Star Kid and Star Poster Program toward these goals.

August of 1993, Star’s debut. There was a noticeable influence on students, where he appeared on bulletin boards, banners, walls, and t-shirts. Originally the program was a simple Star Poster art-school enrichment activities and it was literally “run by the seat of the pants.” There was no structured course outline, objectives, or educational documents. By the initial success and interest by other students and faculty, a poster formalized program is written.

A few years had passed. In 1999 I had gone through a divorce and subsequent bankruptcy. It is my belief that everyone should have a purpose in life, a kind of dream to be pursued in the direction of: for, the only life worth living is one in pursuit of dreams come true. But, I lost my dreams. I left the poster and program art education and then returned to Wyoming in 2000, again a Special Education instructor for a short time.

In 2001 I found an art position in Lampasas, Texas to be closer to my three sons and make a little more than the meager salary north. Here I started the tutorial of how to make posters in the sixth grade students. A few years later I met a beautiful and wonderful woman, third grade teacher, Joan Butts. A year later we were married on the anniversary of our first date. (Now some of you might think: “How funny, she became Butts Bear” However,, it gets better. Her maiden name was originally Ware. Now from time to time I tease her with “True Butts Bear.” Certainly, The truth is funnier than fiction.)

The summer of 2004 Joan and I headed to Yellowstone on our honeymoon, where I used to cross-country skiing in winter. Joan had never had the pleasure of experiencing the grandeur of this incredible area. On the way back we got a call from my sister Erlene that our aunt Velma was in hospital in Aberdeen, South Dakota and being sent home with Hospice. I was one of the executors of her will. So we made a detour to visit Velma the last week of her life. Then we went on our honeymoon to Yellowstone National Park and further west to Joan’s son, Kyle, and his family to meet in Utah. August of the following year I was the winner of a visit by the local sheriff. I was sued by the adopted son of Velma’s who’s ten years my senior.

As you know, perceptive, 1991 was not yet fifty years ago and are probably curious how the focus of the Star Poster Program has become a half-century odyssey in such a short time. Well, here’s where it starts jetting back, painfully fast and furious.

Within a few short days I was ready to work and live in-service teacher for the coming school year. Joan had already left. I was pacing the house wearing only my shirt, underwear and socks. I just could not go to dress. I can not remember how long this was going on, but it seemed like a few hours. Joan and I had called him and begged for her to take me to a psychiatrist. I need help now! Of course, I had a nervous breakdown.

Joan hurried home and contacted a psychiatrist, but what I needed was more direct. My heart was racing and blood pressure was dangerously high. The doctor prescribed medication and we agreed for me to be advised the following day.

It was not the lawsuit itself, that was the greatest conflict. It was that it did and some of what I had to face deeply buried secrets from my past I was forced to confront experiences that I had never known to anyone.
During the second grade I lived with my aunt and uncle Dick Velma on a farm just north of Warner, South Dakota. A spring evening, my older cousin, a senior in high school, and I had gone to the barn. It was part of our jobs to feed and milk the cows. Occasionally we had to clean the stables and put the manure in the spreader for later use as fertilizer. The latter was not a favorite job because I had had a pitch fork full of fresh manure in my face smashed.

This time the trip to the barn was different: there was no food, no milk, and no cleaning. I climbed on stage to separate stalls, if I’d done more. My cousin and I started talking: he is assured of a rope loop around a bail ceiling rafters. He pulled me over and put a noose around my neck. I was terrified! This time he was happy to let my feet stay on the shelves caught booth. After dinner a few days later when we went to the barn chores, he hung me from the rafter again. This time he made sure my feet could not reach the barn. There I hung, fighting for my life while smothering helplessly trying to get my fingers to pry the rope from my neck. A moment later my uncle Dick burst through the barn door and hastily saved me.

Oh, I had this trauma shared with others over the years, but not what he had done for me, something about me that was worse. Something men are too ashamed and afraid to admit it, especially given the stigma associated with them when your life dedicated to working with children. This was the deep scars on the face and I finally needed to seek professional help and on foot, reach sexual abuse.

That summer I got to return to live with my father, mother, two older sisters and two younger brothers in Minneapolis. In mid April the following spring, my father rode his bike to his car to get to his sisters on the Lower Sioux Indian Reservation near Morton, Minnesota and was slain by a drunken driver in a hit and run. I never forget answering the door to the knock of a police officer to inform my mother’s life shattering news. I was eight years old and suddenly had the “man of the house and grow up fast now.

The lawsuit forced me to review the past with many other unpleasant memories. That is my mother us to Aberdeen, where I was going to fourth grade. Looking back at this moment in northeastern South Dakota, I could see that my mother probably suffered a manic / depressive disorder, if not just depression. Who can blame her? We lived on welfare, like my mother, Mable, had only to raise five children, not the possession of a license and had no employment in thirteen years. Sometimes she gets mad at me and throw everything was within reach. Once I was attacked from all over the kitchen by a tin green beans and another example fortunate enough to dodge the whirling flight of a butcher knife.

We lived in a rental house there that Velma had owned. After the kindergarten began at four, at the beginning of the sixth grade I was ten years old. Mom, Aunt Velma, and grandma Wobick decided I needed a male role model. Therefore, just before my eleventh birthday I was sent alone on a Greyhound bus from Aberdeen to my uncle and grandfather of Neil Samuel Bear at the bus station in Ventura, California.

Dealing with these issues also made me look at previous tests that have some impact on the development of Star Poster and the current emphasis on trying to have child abuse reduction. This goes back to the age of four and I was my parents and placed in a foster family where the head of the house was a policeman. Why I was in a “home” has never come to my memory, but the distress of the event is always there.

Nobody can convince me there is no God … No one can convince me that he does not intervene … No one can convince me he does not have a plan for our lives. I’ve seen the evidence … I felt the gentle pressure of leading the Potter’s hands on this body of clay. Hind sight is clearly sharper than the current vision. If we are open to take a look at God’s shaping of our lives, the direction, redirection, rescue and silent voice, we are humiliated with sublime awe of his participation in all this.

When I was waiting for conscientious objector discharge from the army in 1974, I asked God what He wanted me to do with my life. Art has a strong interest of mine for a long time I wanted a commercial artist and art director to be. As a still, small voice in my head I heard, “Art Teacher.” So, that’s what I sought. I have dealt with all four categories of child abuse to some extent: neglect, physical, emotional and sexual. It is the culmination of training and experience, all the good and the painful scars that lead to the development of Star Kids and Coolality the direct influence of God in my life that the Star Poster Program has made its’ course.

Poster The Star program is designed as a joint altruism in which individuals, organizations and businesses. It teaches children how to make posters by using the elements of design, together with words and pictures, to successfully make immediate and long-term emotional and intellectual impact in the minds of other children and adults in the light of social and environmental responsibilities. Peer influence is recognized for the behavior and influence is an important component of this system. Ultimately, the goal of the Star Poster Program is to support children in making a committed effort toward improving not only the local, regional or national, but also the larger collective global community.

In this age of media and the sentiment seems to focus on the American military presence in other parts of the world and the billions of dollars spent on fighting terrorism. They also bring those involved as heroes. This is certainly true. However, every day, everywhere in this country and around the world there are other battles as important, just as devastating to the victims of abuse. The lives of tens of thousands of children are affected every day shockingly physical, emotional, sexual, and neglect. The children who battle their own circumstances of terror are real heroes.

Where are the billions of dollars spent on the horrors of child abuse? There seems no hope for the government to devote resources to the war against child abuse. It just does not seem so important for politicians. Then it is up to us as individuals to try and fight this fight a bit at a time to influence positive change. Sometimes it is not much, but here and there can be up to an issue of monumental consequence.

You do not get rich, a famous personality or a leader of the community to a productive change to make to some degree. I’m just a teacher who trains children in art in a small Texas town, which until now has been on a fifty-year odyssey in the development of art classes for children, a commitment to change the world one poster at a time. I really do not see a significant transformation in the fight against child abuse. It is the legacy I leave behind that really makes a difference. It is the Star Poster Program and the children have learned a visual voice to add to their repertoire of communication skills in sharing their concerns, hopes and dreams as a compass that leads to a better community. These children are our unsung heroes, they really need our intervention, support and prayers.

A dream of me in the beginning of this program was for Star Kid Coolality one day win the Nobel Peace Prize, after all Mickey Mouse won an Oscar, why couldn’ta cartoon character recognized to influence peaceful measures? Now I have a bigger, more important and noble vision for Star, helping children themselves the power to fight against abuse, for them to make a positive difference in their own life and those of others.
