Curbing Alcohol Addiction and Abuse Is an Uphill Battle for College Administrators
Recently, 120 university presidents joined a movement to reduce alcohol consumption to 18. They feel there would be less alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse, if they were more accessible. Since there are no statistics to support this theory, and plenty to refute the suggestion seems absurd especially when it comes from a group of highly qualified professionals that you would expect to see the facts. Because they seem to have derailed when it comes to solutions to alcohol abuse and dependence? It could be because state laws are not giving them the backup they need.
A study conducted by Harvard University found a direct correlation between state laws and alcohol binge drinking one of the most common manifestations of alcohol dependence and abuse on college campuses and in the adult population in general. Here’s an example of their findings:
University of binge drinking was 31% lower in states that have laws restricting sales of alcohol high volume. Some states require registration of kegs, some restrict Happy Hour, some do not allow open containers, beer mugs do not sell or allow alcohol advertising.
Among the 23 states that require registration are four barrel that also have the lowest rate of binge drinking: California, Georgia, New Mexico and Idaho. Georgia, where you must register drums, can not have open containers, they can not buy pitchers of beer, and can not advertise alcohol, has the lowest quarter of students binge drinking.
At most universities, binge drinking is done off campus, not in a college dorm. So the students are directly affected by the same laws that affect adults. Indeed, the rate of binge drinking college is 32% lower in countries with the lowest rate of adult binge drinking.
Wisconsin, home of the University of Wisconsin Madison, one of the biggest party schools in the United States has the highest rate of adult binge drinking and the second highest rate of student binge drinking. In Georgia, where binge drinking student is the fourth lowest adult binge drinking is the eighth lowest.
Many universities have programs to prevent abuse and alcoholism; But if we are not supported by the law and students can simply go off campus and drink with few restrictions, the universities are fighting an uphill battle. While it is nice to think that students should stop drinking based on reason or sense of ethics, the nature of alcohol dependence, or any addiction for that matter, making it highly unlikely.
Nearly half of alcohol-related deaths in the United States are caused by binge drinking and about five college students die every day alcohol-related accidents. Even those who get injured or die, are virtually wasting hard-earned dollars spent on university education – Did you know that a night of heavy drinking affects the thinking for a month?
Universities that want to curb binge drinking, addiction and alcohol abuse among their students would better spend their time lobbying legislators to tighten the laws. It will help universities, students, adults, and the community. Lower the drinking age, on the other hand, will put us right back in the same position it has caused to be raised to 21 in the first place.
Meanwhile, while we wait for the powers That be to resolve all this out, if you have a college student who needs help with alcohol dependence or abuse, get them into alcohol rehab as soon as possible.
