The genesis of the Tempe Diablos Tempe was in the Chamber of Commerce, who was looking for a way to promote the city to other areas of the country. At that moment a highlight of the spring in Arizona, the Major League Baseball Spring Training. There were three teams training in Arizona at the time. The San Francisco Giants played inat the time Phoenix Municipal Stadium, the Chicago Cubs were based in Scottsdale Stadium and the Cleveland Indians Hi Corbett Field played in Tucson. It was known that the Oakland A’s would be Mesa’s Rendezvous Park in 1969 were replaced by the Cubs left town in 1965. The San Diego Padres had also announced plans to conduct training in Yuma beginning in 1969.
Thurs Liem, a young manager with a local home builder, was president of the Tempe Chamber of Commerce and was instrumental in forming the Tempe Diablos and the Special Events Committee of the Chamber, whose main aim would be to attract and Spring Training in Tempe support. Don became the first president of the Tempe Diablos organization as 1968 marks its founding years. In 1969, the city and the Diablos to host an extension of the Major League Baseball team called the Seattle Pilots at Tempe Diablo Stadium, the newly appointed. After one year, the pilots moved to Milwaukee Brewers and continues to train in Arizona, but not in Diablo Stadium.
However, in conjunction with the city, the Diablos stadium was to host a number of other events serve. In mid 1970, the Seattle Mariners began to train in the stadium. They were replaced by the then California Angels name in the mid 90s. Later called both the Anaheim Angels and now the California Angels in Anaheim, the team still plays at Diablo Stadium for the capacity crowd with most of the game operation staffed by the Tempe Diablos and the various volunteers. The proceeds of this transaction to help finance the Tempe Diablos countless contributions to a variety of Tempe charities, causes and scholarships.
In 1972, the organizing body to create the Fiesta Bowl approached the Diablos as the official team presentation Hospitality Hosts used for the two universities participating in the game. The Diablos enjoyed this role and thirty years, provided an excellent service to the treating institutions, helping the Fiesta Bowl to the place where outstanding football clubs and their supporters and fans wanted to become a New Year’s Day. The Diablos continue that role today by helping the Insight Bowl in Tempe who sits host.
Early in the organization created a scholarship program that funded more than 1.5 million U.S. dollars in aid to graduates of high schools participating in Tempe Arizona State University. The Diablos also a significant contribution towards improving education in the city of Tempe by supporting educators with cash grants and funding specific educational programs, as requested by the various school districts.
Together with the Spring Training revenue, the Diablos also raise funds through a golf tournament and an annual Casino Night with more than sixteen hundred people taking part in the one-night event.
The Diablos are not all work and no fun. Annual Trail Ride Diablo is a wilderness three days event occurring to attract more than 40 years about 60-70 riders. Members and their families also enjoy a number of social events each year, none of which is paid from funds donated.
The Tempe Diablos really feel the power of a community lies in the willingness of citizens to participate and to give back, an idea illustrated by this excellent organization.
