About Nursing School Admissions in California

Enter nursing school in California can be very difficult. Due to the recession and high unemployment in the state, more and more people are trying to enter a new career in nursing. Given the current economic environment, there are many pre-nursing students than places available in nursing schools in California. Therefore, it is very important that applicants make every effort to maximize their chances of getting somewhere.

In California’s community colleges, students accepted into their nursing programs through the lottery rather than choosing those with the highest qualifications. Of course, candidates will still be required to complete all the prerequisite nursing courses with a decent grade. Chancellor of the university community uses a formula for determining what is a decent grade. After all students met the pre-nursing requirements have been processed, the community college has a lottery to determine who goes to nursing school. Note that students graduating from nursing programs in the university community earn the same RN license as the graduates of the undergraduate program in nursing.

The best strategy to get in is to apply broadly and widely. All that is needed is to enter a community college. If an applicant applies to one school, there is a high probability of not being accepted. Moreover, if an applicant applies to 20 schools of nursing, the opportunities to enter at least one of them has improved. Therefore, students need to have enough pre-nursing prerequisite courses to ensure they are qualified to participate in the lottery in the maximum number of nursing programs as possible. Fortunately, the prerequisite courses tend to be very similar from one institution to another, so it is possible to cover the vast majority of schools in the nearby community. After that, apply to all college nursing programs in the community within driving distance of home.

Even with this strategy is a good chance of being accepted anywhere. Students should look at private schools and degree programs in nursing. While these options are more expensive, students should consider the opportunity cost of delaying your nursing career for a few months or even a year. Ideally, each pre-nursing student in California will be applied to a mixture of large numbers of junior college programs, ASN, four years of public university BSN programs, and private schools of nursing.
