Jane Good morning and thanks for participating in our interview.
Norm: Please tell our readers a bit ‘of your personal and professional background.
Jane: I am a business consultant. During my career of thirty years, I served as a director with energy companies and brokerage loans. Also, I served in the faculty of John F. Kennedy University. I received an MBA in management from Golden Gate University and a master’s degree in organizational psychology from John F. Kennedy University.
During my many years of management and control, I discovered that successful people possess three fundamental attributes. These attributes are responsible for building successful companies, lasting relationships and a more balanced life. My latest book, “The art of managing … How to build a better working environment and relations” clearly defines these attributes and teaches how to be successful in business and relationships. My husband and I live in California.
Norm: Can you tell us a bit ‘on The Art of Management?
Jane: We have all worked with people we admire. Why respond favorably to them? What makes these people successful in both their working life and their personal life? How did their environment and the impact those relationships are?
“The art of managing … How to build a better working environment and Reports’ references to the history of management theory, leadership and organizational effectiveness. Provides insights on how you can develop the characteristics of those who successfully manage both their workplace and their personal lives. It offers tools for the formation of effective teams and motivating people.
Norm: As there are tons of books on management, what makes the book different from others and why would anyone want to buy your book?
Jane: “The art of managing … How to build a better working environment and Relationships” is different from others because it bridges the worlds of business and psychology. The management of the workplace is really about relationship management. Basically, people are still the most important resource. The book provides insights on how to develop three (3) the key attributes that make successful leaders in managing the workplace and their personal lives. The three (3) the key attributes are the care and compassion for people, serving others and the community, and working on self (mind, body and spirit).
Testimonies of educators and business executives say that this book is an excellent book for managers and management students who want exposure to the spectrum of theory and practice that can make a difference in terms of efficient management. My focus is on what managers need to know and understand about themselves and others is the key to effectively manage relationships in organizations.
Norm: As a follow-up does not seem to be any authoritative standards that exist for the authors or publishers work, how do you know that a book of business is equal? How can I check the competence of the author?
Jane: When the author has references on the back of the book and comments, testimonials and / or book reviews or book, you can usually tell if the book is up to par. The author’s expertise can be demonstrated with the credentials and experience of the author.
Having managed and worked in both a large organization and a small business and have taught at university level and degree at the university, I think that what I write is credible.
Part of the curriculum to achieve the MBA required intervention of a company which is how I learned to do in an organization, as well as teaching students and faculty at the university.
Part of the curriculum for the achievement of organizational psychology but needed to read over 80 books on management, which is what I used to develop the history of management theory. Again, the references to tell you the research was good, the testimony describing how the book was put together, and the credentials and experience of the author, which makes the book credible.
Norm: How would you define success and what do you think are the ingredients necessary to achieve personal and business success?
Jane Webster’s dictionary defines success as a favorable effect; achieve something desired, planned or expected.
I think the ingredients needed to achieve business success and personal are the three (3) the key attributes that “The art of managing … How to build a better working environment and more reports” about – the care and compassion for people, and others to reach the community, and working on self (mind, body and spirit). I developed these common attributes from interviews with successful leaders for my thesis on “Personal Mastery in Organizational Leadership” for the MA – Organizational Psychology.
Norm: Why do you think this is an important book at this time? Who do you think will benefit from your book and why? As has been the feedback so far?
Jane: As society’s needs and changing environment, history reflects the leadership and organizational needs of society. In the last generation or two, companies are adopting a more “holistic” or “organic approach to management theory. The next generation has emerged with a better education and skills, also to be raised to excel and achieve. This generation will in the information age contributing significantly to the economy knowledge-value/based.
companies are embracing progressive transformation, examining their businesses in the areas of operations, policy and strategy, project management, accounting and finance, and sales and marketing.
Transformation embodies change management, performance improvement and reengineering. There is a profound fundamental valuation of each process and organization. The culture focuses on teamwork and trying to eliminate the silos that have occurred in 1980. Some of the issues are urgent satisfaction and employee dissatisfaction. Customers expect more for less. Employees are frustrated with management. The transformation has resulted not only look at processes, but also enhances the work.
I think the book is important at this time, because in 2000, the values of workers’ and beliefs are now one focus after years of neglect. Employees provide a product or service. The management of the workplace is really about how to manage these relationships. Bridging business and psychology will help managers and leaders in managing both their personal lives and their workplace. They will learn to effectively and successfully manage their relations have long-lasting relationships and a more balanced life.
I expect the book will benefit the new manager trying to understand a discipline that is different from their education prepared them and experienced managers seeking new ways to analyze and improve their effectiveness.

Norm: What kind of research did you write The art of management?
Jane: “The art of managing … How to build a better working environment and relationships is the result of research by reading over 80 reference books, periodicals, case studies, internet, interviews twelve-successful companies and seven CEOs, senior vice presidents and skills of general managers and vice presidents, and I’ve learned and applied from:
MBA-Management (Completed analysis on my company uses an effective organizational intervention methodology. I found that this method could be used for any business.)
MA-Organizational Psychology (completed a thesis on “Personal Mastery in Organizational Leadership.” I learned that successful leaders possess three fundamental attributes that not only help in managing the workplace, but also in management of personal relationships.)
As faculty, I taught undergraduate and graduate students at the university how to manage organizations. The integrated business and concepts of psychology and methodology which included motivating the teams that are using the stages of group development. I introduced students to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Personality Preferences (administered and interpreted the instrument).
Controlled and managed for businesses large and small.
Norm: Can you tell us how you found representation for your book? Did you pitch to an agent, or query publishers who will most likely publish this type of book? Any refusal? You self-publish?
Jane: I wrote and self-published with Infinity, because I did not want my work changed. It ’s the first book that bridges the worlds of business and psychology.
The beginning of the book is a bit ‘academic, sharing much of the history of management theory, and an overview of the different management models and techniques used in the last 150 years or so.
However, once past this introduction clinic in the opening chapter, the book starts to go with adding a lot of interesting tools and compelling examples that make the book a very good read.
There are some set of tools to assess the effectiveness and alignment of an organization, as a way to address any deficiencies or alignment errors can be discovered. Jane: My overall experience as a published author has been suspended. I’m reaching more people than I would have been able to achieve in the classroom or as a consultant. I am currently gathering information for a second book starts with the logo: “The art of management …” The tape record and write thoughts and comments on a daily basis. I drafted a chapter on diversity in the workplace (by popular demand from people who read the book and wanted more than what I faced in the book). I expect that this book should be ready within a year and a half or two years.
