85 Things That Make Austin Awesome

Austin has to live as a great city to visit for a number of reasons and has been recognized on his way to numerous “best of” lists. When I refer to Austin, I’m on the big Austin, TX metro area, which covers includes a number of suburbs. Some of them are about Texas, but that also counts. Here are some highlights for 2009:

1st Austin is the third The strongest metro economy in the country. (Brookings Institution, 6/16/2009)

2nd Austin City “Best of the recession recovery. Austin’s diversified economy, home to Dell, the University of Texas and the Texas state government kept the economy strong. (Forbes, 10/06/2009)

3rd Texas # 1 for Business. Texas caught the No. 1 spot due to its ability to attract Fortune 500 companies, its solid economy, low cost of living and its pro-business tax climate. (Management, 06/01/2009)

4th Austin ranks # 7 in Best Cities for Finding Opportunity (June 2009)

5th Austin-No. 7 Tech Center. Texas’ capital city is home to over 2660 technology companies. (Bizjournals.com, 11/05/2009)

7th Texas Rank 4th Top seven tax-free havens. No income tax, low business are exempt gross receipts tax (sole proprietors and partnerships).

9th Austin City Best Bargain in the U.S. Austin earned top marks in all areas. “You have the triple whammy of being a university city, a state capital and a technology center” (Forbes, 09.05)

10th Austin is # 1 on Relocation.com ’s list of top cities for a new beginning. (May 2009)

11th Austin is a city of the future. fDi Magazine ’s North American Cities of the Future 2009/10, No. 5 rows Austin. Seven categories were used to select the winners: economic potential, human resources, cost efficiency, to determine quality of life, infrastructure, business friendliness and advertising strategy. 12th Texas is tops in the production of wind energy. Texas leads in wind power and the largest wind farms installed (six of the nation’s top 10). Other new wind power in Texas was in the course of the year than in any country except China and the U.S., Texas, if a country it would rank sixth in the world behind Germany, the rest of the United States, Spain, China and India. 13th Austin named # 1 Big City for Jobs. Of the 10 cities with the best employment prospects, is the leader of Austin. Austin was also the six named the best city for jobs in the overall standings. (Forbes, 04/12/2009; new geography, 15/04/2009)

14th UT’s McCombs ranks 18 among the nation’s Best Business Schools. According to U.S. News & World Report, 82.4% were graduates of the McCombs ‘2008 full-time employed as a graduation. (U. S. News & World Report, 12/04/2009)

16th Texas is the nation’s second Largest Cyber State. Texas remains the second largest state in front of cyber tech employment, behind California and New York. (Tech America, 31.03.2009)

17th Forbes.com Ranks 8th Best Place for Business and Careers (Forbes.com, 3/27/2009 Austin)

18th Texas voted best for business by Chief Executive. Texas was at number one on the list of the magazine, done based on surveys of 543 CEOs, for the fourth year in sequence. (Chief Executive, 25/03/2009)

19th Austin and Raleigh are the fastest-growing metro areas. Raleigh-Cary, NC, and Austin-Round Rock, Texas, were the nation’s fastest-growing metropolitan areas between 2007 and 2008. The Austin Metro saw its population rise by 3.8% between July 2007 and July 2008 to 1.7 million. The Austin metro area was the location of the sixth fastest growing county (with over 10,000 inhabitants), Williamson, and in the 10th Rank Hays County. (U. S. Bureau of the Census, 3/19/2009)

20th Austin-Bergstrom International among the top performing airports. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) in third place in North America (where the top 2 Canadian airports). In ABIA ranked third for his size (5-15 million passengers) between airports around the globe. (Airports Council International, 10/03/2009)

21st Austin named # 2 healthiest Housing Market for the year 2009. While other markets, lost jobs, 17,400 jobs added in Austin last year 2.3% growth. It helps that Austin home to both a large university, the University of Texas, and the state capital. (Builderonline.com, 17/02/2009)

22nd Austin named one of America’s Top 30 Most Wired Cities. Since 2007, Forbes cities’ wired ratio by calculating the proportion of Internet users with high-speed connections and the number of companies that offer high-speed Internet measured. As many city residents access the Internet from Wi-Fi, we also measure the number of public wireless Internet hotspots in a particular city. (Forbes.com, 01/22/2009)

23rd Austin named one of the coolest 15 North American cities. Famous for Tex-Mex food and its eclectic music scene, Austin is also the bustling capital of the Lone Star State. Many visitors find their relaxed atmosphere very appealing. (MSN Travel, 22/1/2009)

24th Austin named one America’s 25 Strongest Housing Markets. “Texas has the best large state industry in the country right now,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Economy.com. (Forbes, 07/01/2009)
